One of the first things I did when I moved a few months ago was to set up my writing space. I was excited because it was the first time I had an actual room I could call my office. I put my desk in there, set up bookshelves overflowing with books, and started a cork board for my Works in Progress (WIPs).
After living here for a few months, I’ve come to the realization that while I love my office, it is not the only place I write. I write at the table in the kitchen, at the eat up counter, and on the couch. Before quarantine, I liked to go to Starbucks or the library and write there.
However, I have found that if I’m having trouble focusing or forcing myself to sit down and write/edit (especially edit), then going into my office is the best place for me to actually get some work done. It makes me feel even more serious about my writing by having a designated spot for it. I don’t need an office to get writing done, but I enjoy it. Going in there signals to my brain: it’s time to get stuff done, no messing around.
