So I figured I would wait a few weeks after the show came out to not spoil anything. If you haven’t yet watched Shadow and Bone on Netflix then stop reading this now and go check it out!

Background

The show came out on Netflix on April 23, 2021. It’s based off of two separate book series written by Leigh Bardugo: Shadow and Bone Trilogy and Six of Crows Duology. You can see my reviews for the Shadow and Bone books here: Shadow and Bone (1), Seige and Storm (2), Ruin and Rising (3). I read the Six of Crows Duology before I created my website and gave them each 5 stars on goodreads.

My Views

I really liked this show. I think the combination of the two book series was done seamlessly and made it even better than the books. I know normally people like the books better than the movies/tv shows, but in this case I loved the tv show way more than the books.

(From Left to Right) Mal, The Darkling, Alina, Kaz, Jesper, Inej

I thought the casting for the show was done perfectly! From Kaz to Genya I thought everyone fit the looks and personality of the book characters. I wasn’t a large fan of the Darkling or Mal in the beginning Shadow and Bone books, but wow from the first episode in the tv show I loved them both!

The Darkling and Mal

One of my critiques in the books is that Alina came across to me as weak/making herself weak for Mal when she had a ton of power, but in the show she shows strength and Mal doesn’t have a problem with that (yet who knows about next season).

Alina Starkov

Also, Leigh Bardugo has now made me raise my author goals since she put herself into a tv show based on her books -GOALS!

What I Can’t Wait For

Nikolai! I can’t wait for my favorite privateer prince to make an appearance in the show! I think he brought comic relief in the books and his flying ships were iconic. Hopefully in season two him and the Grisha twins that are part of his crew, Tamar and Tolya, make an appearance.

I also hope we get to see more of the Six of Crows crew interacting with the Shadow and Bone peeps. They ended the first season like they were going their own ways, but would keep an eye out for each other. I really hope their separate paths bring them together again!

In Conclusion

The Shadow and Bone tv show gets five stars from me and I can’t wait for the second season to come out. Comment below and let me know what you thought of the show!
